Leaving His Family

Comments - Poignant scene from the kabuki play commonly known as "The Higashiyama Storybook," based on a true story, showing Kiuchi Sogo leaving his family. A local mayor, he petitioned the shogun directly for tax relief for his town, bypassing the crooked governor Hotta Masanobu. Facing execution for this illegal act, he left his family. His wife and children watch from the window of their home as he walks away, his back already covered with snow. His wife holds a small child in her arms as two young boys look out the window, one perched on the window sill, the other waving goodbye. A charming and touching subject.
