Hotoke-gozen Reading a Farewell Poem - Lovely portrait of the young shirabyoshi dancer Hotoke-gozen. She sang and danced for the great Taira no Kiyomori, who fell madly in love with her, sending away his previous dancer, Gio. In this scene, Hotoke-gozen holds a lantern up to read Gio's farewell poem written on a sliding shoji screen. She wears a pale blue kimono patterned with leaves and blossoms, tied with a green obi. Her bare feet peek from beneath the hem of the robe, which trails onto the floor around her. A miniature cherry tree blooms in a blue pot at right. A charming design.
