The 47 Ronin, Act 5: The Yamazaki Highway - Terrific illustration of Act 5 from the classic kabuki play about the 47 ronin, the "Kanadehon Chushingura." Here, the villain Sadakuro has just robbed and killed the elderly Yoichibei after encountering him on the Yamazaki Highway at night. A wild boar charges him, forcing him up a tree, where he clings to the trunk, watching the snarling animal in surprise. At upper left, the hunter Kampei hears the noise, and shoots into the dark, aiming for the wild pig, but mistakenly kills Sadakuro instead of the boar. A great image with the fierce boar wonderfully drawn and detailed, and an atmospheric night setting.
