Making an Arrest, 1873

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of guards attempting to arrest a rogue. He raises a sword in one hand as he simultaneously grabs the rope two of the attackers have thrown over his shoulder. His adversaries threaten him with iron truncheons, thrusting them at his chest, the fellow at right ready to strike him over the head. A shower of snow falls over them, knocked loose from the snow-covered trees behind the group, beautifully detailed with hand-applied white pigment to simulate falling snow. From left, the actors are Seki Sanjuro as Tsuchiya Kozo, Nakamura Juzo as Hara Hayato, Kawarasaki Gonjuro as Tokugawa Zenzaburo, Nakamura Tokizo, and Bando Kakitsu as Ukyo. A great subject with large expressive figures and fine line work in the hair.
