Comments - Fantastic scene depicting the retainers of Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raiko) at the mountain lair of the terrible demon, Shuten-doji. Disguised as traveling monks, Raiko and his men traveled to the monster's hideout on Mt. Oe to rescue the young beauties he had kidnapped. They are shown here enjoying a banquet, plying Shuten-doji with sake to put him into a drunken stupor. The samurai at right pours sake from a large container into a kettle for warming, grimacing as he looks back over his shoulder. The beauty behind him carries a long-handled sake server, while on the verandah beyond, several women look wistfully out over the rugged mountain landscape. A nicely detailed image from this famous tale.
