Beauty Playing the Koto, 1896

Comments - Lovely triptych depicting a beauty playing the koto in an elegant room. She leans over the instrument, absorbed in the music, the fabric of her flowing robe swirling onto the floor around her. Her blue-green kimono is patterned with leaves and stylized cherry blossoms, trimmed in red and tied with a red floral obi. A woman in the center smiles at her as she listens, while a young girl at left cuddles a cat to her shoulder. The folding screen at right features colorful folding fans above flowing water detailed with silver mica, while a low burnished lacquer table at left holds a striking ikebana floral arrangement of blossoming plum branches. A beautiful subject, attractive colored and detailed with burnishing on the hair and embossing on the white kimono collar.
