Female Warrior and Rogues on a Ship, 1865

Comments - Fantastic five-panel kabuki print depicting a female warrior and a gang of rogues on a ship. An elderly white-haired man stands in the front of the boat, holding a compass in his outstretched hand. Beside him, a man relaxes on a cushion with a cup of sake, an array of food spread out on a low lacquer table before him. He has a heavy quilted kimono draped over his shoulders, smiling as he looks up. The female warrior stands at right, tugging on the end of an oar held by a boatman. Her long hair is pulled back into a ponytail, and she wears a fringed robe over her armor. A man in the center lounges atop a straw-covered sake cask, a pile of casks stacked up behind him. He smokes a pipe and holds a tobacco pouch in his other hand. Cranes fly through the air above the quiet sea, with many tiny white sails dotting the horizon. An incredible subject with large figures, wonderfully detailed and attractively colored, with soft shading in the water and fine embossing in the old man's white hair. A terrific five-panel design with real graphic appeal.
