The 47 Ronin, Acts 1, 2, and 3 - Terrific triptych featuring scenes from the popular kabuki play "Chushingura," which tells the tale of the 47 ronin. In a scene from Act 1 at right, Lord Moronao kneels at the foot of the palace steps before the Imperial envoy, dressed in black, and Lord Hangan, who wears a blue robe patterned with his crossed hawk feather mon or crest. Lord Hangan's wife watches the meeting with a worried expression, noting the anger on the envoy's face. At left, Act 2 shows the faithful Honzo preparing to cut a pine branch to show his loyalty to the vendetta. Nicely colored and composed, with a lovely view of Mt. Fuji seen through the pine trees at left.
