A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Samurai Otokonosuke and Loyal Nursemaid Masaoka, 1886 - Interesting kabuki scene from a play based on the disputed succession of the Date Clan. At left, the samurai Otokonosuke, who has been faithfully guarding the young heir to the clan, lunges forward with a dirk to confront the evil magician, Nikki Danjo, who is plotting to kill the heir. At right, the loyal nursemaid Masaoka, who has been keeping the heir in her palace quarters, frowns as she kneels on the floor, the sister of Nikki Danjo, Yashio, standing behind her and watching in alarm. Otokonosuke wears a boldly patterned vest over a green kimono, his red stage makeup giving him a fierce appearance. A bold image.
