Umagiri: Middle Act Play at the Kabuki Theater, 1896

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Umagiri" at the Kabuki-za or Kabuki Theater. The samurai Matsudaira Choshichiro is in need of money, and has heard rumors of a large sum of cash being transported by horse to Tokugawa Iemitsu. He waits for the shipment at Yamato Bridge, attacking the horseman and stealing the horse laden with money. At left, Choshichiro holds the halter of the horse in one hand as he thrusts a horse at the groom at right, who stumbles backwards in alarm, flinging his hand out before him defensively. Willow branches frame a view of the bridge in silhouette behind them. From left, the actors are Nakamura Fukusuke and Kataoka Ichizo. A striking design, beautifully detailed with a burnished geometric pattern on the black kimono.
