Comments - Terrific kakemono or vertical diptych illustrating the play "Koi (goro mo) Karigane zome," which tells how the depraved priest Seigen's desire for Princess Sakura leads to tragedy. In this version of the popular tale, Princess Sakura decides to commit suicide by leaping from the verandah of Kiyomizu Temple. She clutches an umbrella over her shoulder as she resolutely jumps, the sleeves of her cherry blossom print kimono fluttering out beside her. Seigen stands below holding a string of prayer beads, looking up but seemingly unaware of the beauty's actions. The actors shown are Iwai Kumesaburo III as Sakura-hime and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Seigen. A fantastic design with beautiful color and wonderful detail in the clothing and setting, including embossing on the white trim of Seigen's kimono. A rare format and a terrific depiction of this classic story, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
