The Great Battle of Shizugamine, 1861 - Incredible Yoshitoshi scene from the 1583 Battle of Shizugamine, where Hideyoshi Toyotomi defeated his rivals to succeed his former master Oda Nobunaga. Hideyoshi appears on horseback in the center gripping a pole arm, staring fiercely over his shoulder. The man in the center carries a gruesome war trophy of severed heads tied to a bamboo pole, which bends under the weight of its gory ornaments. At upper right, a fellow samurai has a head skewered on the end of his sword, blood dripping down the blade. Craggy mountains surround a lake, the peaks rising against a dark night sky. A fantastic depiction of the realities of battle, with wonderful detail in the armor, weapons, and realistic facial expressions.
