Battle of the Shirakawa Palace, from the Chronicle of the Hogen War

Comments - Great scene from the Hogen Rebellion of Minamoto no Yoshitomo and his troops attacking Shirakawa Palace. At left, Yoshitomo's black horse paws at the ground as he turns to the side, retainers gathered around him. A dragon figurine tops his helmet, behind him, banners bearing the Minamoto paulownia crest rise above the warriors. Fighting continues in the background as an archer has just fired off an arrow from a tower of the palace at right. The first time we've seen this interesting samurai design, also in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28 1/4"
