Yoshiwara Courtesans - Terrific triptych showing Yoshiwara courtesans enjoying a moment of leisure, several of the women preparing to rehearse music. At right, a beauty removes a koto from its cloth case while behind her, another woman tunes a shamisen. In the center foreground, a courtesan holds a kokyu, a small instrument similar to a shamisen but played upright with a bow. The other women smile happily and watch with interest, gathering around the musicians. A young attendant at right carries in a kettle on a black lacquer tray, and another kettle sits on a warmer nearby. Cherry trees bloom below the verandah, and a row of lanterns is hung from the ceiling. Wonderful detail in the architectural setting and colorful kimono fabrics, with delicate embossing on the white kimono collars and burnishing in the black robe at left. A lovely design.
