An Evening Concert, 1852 - Fantastic triptych showing Prince Genji and his companions enjoying an evening of musical entertainment in a palace. The young nobleman strums a biwa or Japanese lute, while two other guests play the koto and flute. They are seated around an ornate brazier piled with red hot coals. At left, an attendant brings in another lamp as evening falls, while a young girl hands a lacquer offering tray to an older companion. The room overlooks a lake bordered by blossoming trees. Terrific detail in the elegant fabrics and interior furnishings, with burnishing on the black kimono. A lovely Edo era subject.
