Battle at Hagashima, Ise Province, 1860

Comments - Great image of samurai in the midst of the Battle of Hagashima in Ise Province, a hail of arrows flying past as they fight with swords and spears. In the center, a young hero raises his sword high above his head, his hair blowing wildly about his face, while knocking down another opponent with his fringed standard. A general on horseback gallops past at right, arrows slamming into his wooden shield as he peers around it, gripping his sword overhead. At left, a warrior in the foreground steps on the arm of a fallen enemy as he advances with his sword drawn. A fellow samurai faces the other direction, several plates of armor torn from his red guards over his legs. He stares ahead fearless, thrusting his chin forward defiantly. Terrific detail in the armor and weapons, with the dark night sky adding an ominous note.
