Meiji Government Officials, 1881

Comments - Fantastic group portrait of the Meiji Emperor and Empress surrounded by dignitaries and members of the government. The Emperor sits at top center, resplendent in a military uniform trimmed with gold braid and a fancy plumed hat. His wife sits across from him wearing traditional dress, a golden ornament in her hair as she waves a folding fan. Men in both western dress and court robes are gathered around, along with ladies-in-waiting in brightly colored kimono. Terrific detail in the individual figures, each carefully drawn and identified with a name cartouche. A fascinating scene, nicely detailed with embossing on the white kimono collars and burnishing on the black uniforms.
