Scene from Honchoshi Shirabe no Iroito, 1864

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Honchoshi Shirabe no Iroito" of the geisha Koito and two young men inside a shop selling yarn and thread. The beauty smiles happily at the visitors as she adjusts a hairpin. In the center, Honcho Tsunagoro regards her soberly, while at left, Omatsuri Sashichi frowns, tilting his chin up defiantly. Shelves at left hold spools of colorful yarns, while a ledger and abacus rest on a low desk below. From left, the actors are Bando Hikosaburo V, Kawarazaki Gonjuro I, and Iwai Shijaku II. Nice large expressive figures, with fine detail in the hair, and an attractive interior setting.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 29 1/8" + margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Slight separation along fold at side, repaired. Slight toning. Please see photos for details.
