Soga Brothers at the Hunting Camp, 1881

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of the Soga Brothers arriving at the shogun's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji to fulfill their plan of avenging their father's death. They are met by the courtesan Tora Gozen, who shields a lantern under her sleeve as she allows them into the camp. She smiles happily at her sweetheart, the older brother Juro, who holds a flaming torch aloft at left. Goro waits at right, holding a hat above his head as rain slants down against the night sky. Mt. Fuji is seen in dark silhouette along the horizon at left. From left, the actors are Nakamura Sojuro as Soga Juro, Iwai Hanshiro as Tora Gozen, and Ichikawa Danjuro as Soga Goro. A great design with large colorful figures, the faces and hair detailed with fine line work, and a fine atmospheric setting.
