Travelers under Attack, 1853 - Dramatic scene of a group of travelers being attacked while stopping at a roadside tea stand. In the center, a samurai leans threateningly over a commoner who has tumbled to the ground, drawing his sword with a look of angry determination. The commoner watches him with wide eyes, laying a hand on his attacker's arm in an attempt to calm him. His belongings are scattered across the ground, with clothes and an open basket resting nearby. A woman watches with horror at left, protecting her son behind her back. At right, an elegant beauty looks on from behind a tree, while a young nobleman hides behind his black lacquer hat. In the background, the fight continues with a lone samurai fending off several attackers at once. A fascinating subject with an atmospheric night setting, wonderfully detailed and colored. Includes embossing on the white kimono trim and the white hat on the ground at right.
