Samurai Gathered at the Shore, 1887

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of a group of samurai gathered at an encampment along the shore. The general in the center listens attentively to news from the retainer at left, who leans forward eagerly as he speaks. The general wears an elegant vest over his armor and a tall black court cap, a tasseled command baton in his hand. At right, a smiling beauty holds an offering tray with a red lacquer sake cup on it. The Minamoto crest appears on the cloth panels behind them, with waves lapping at the shore beyond. From left, the actors are Kataoka Gado, Nakamura Fukusuke as Yoshitsune, Ichikawa Danjuro, Arashi Wasaburo, and Ichikawa Gonjuro. A terrific scene with fine detail in the hair and a burnished pattern in the black court cap.
