That Romantic Figure in the Licensed Quarter at Dawn, 1863

Comments - Charming scene of Prince Genji leaving the licensed quarter early in the morning. He pulls on his coat as he leans against the roof of his palanquin, smiling down at the young kamuro or child attendant as the girl tugs on his robe. A courtesan stands beside the doorway, giggling into her sleeve, wearing a blue kimono edged with white flowers and tall wooden geta sandals. At left, a servant waits with a lantern below a willow tree, a sword bearer standing next to her. At right, a beauty pauses to watch two dogs playing in the street as she adjusts a hairpin, while behind her, servants escort courtesans home. An intriguing subject with wonderful detail in the figures and setting, including light embossing in the white kimono collars and trim.
