Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Morning on a Verandah, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Attractive scene of Prince Genji enjoying an early morning on the verandah. Wearing an informal butterfly print kimono, he smiles up at the baby girl carried by the beauty at right. The child waves a tiny fan as she perches on the beauty's shoulder, the woman beaming back at the nobleman. At Genji's side, a young girl offers him a tray with a bowl of water and a toothbrush, while another woman at left lowers a pail into the swiftly flowing water below. A charming design with an interesting palace setting alongside the water.
