The Shirokiya Timber Store, 1858

Comments - Interesting scene from a kabuki play about the maid Okuma, who lived with her parents at the Shirokiya Timber store. She was in love with the hairdresser Saizaburo, but had been promised in marriage to a wealthy man to whom her father owes money. Here, she stands in the entry of the shop, holding a letter and smiling over her shoulder. In the room behind her, a ledger rests on a low desk and blue curtains hang overhead. The actor is Iwai Kumesaburo III. A sweetly expressive figure in a nicely detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 9 1/2"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Thinning at edge, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and creasing, rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details.
