Tomomatsu Entering the Morita-za in a Palanquin, 1865

Comments - Intriguing scene depicting a group of kabuki actors on a busy street in front of the Morita-za or Morita Theater. In the center, the actor Tomomatsu prepares to exit a palanquin, the roof covered with flowers, gesturing to the group gathered at right. At right, a man smiles happily, waving both hands in return. The beauty at right leans forward to pick up the hem of her blue kimono, wearing a dark blue-violet coat bordered with circular leaf and flower motifs. At left, the porters hold lanterns high to illuminate the scene, each wearing a matching blue and white kimono with a dotted towel tied around his head. An attractive triptych with expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting.
