Series; Calligraphy and Pictures for the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, 1872

Calligraphy and Pictures for the Fifty-three Stations - Terrific design from a Tokaido Road series pairing images with verses in calligraphy for the different stations. Different artists contributed designs, including Yoshitora and Kunisada II. The large pictures include landscapes, figures from history and legend, and scenes from kabuki plays and folktales. Several prints feature comic illustrations, including the adventures and mishaps of Kita and Yaji, the bumbling travelers from the popular novel "Shank's Mare." Others include travelers in Western attire or distinctly modern Meiji subjects. These imaginative prints are beautifully detailed with attractive color and fine line work, and offer an interesting Meiji era take on the classic Tokaido subject. A great choice for collectors interested in life along the Tokaido Road.

Shinagawa in Musashi Province: The Old Story of the Bastard Son, Yamanouchi Iganosuke - Dramatic scene of Yamanouchi Iganosuke fighting an adversary on a verandah overlooking the river. He stands triumphantly with one foot atop his foe, who is facedown on the ground, his feet in the air. The warrior looks over his shoulder cautiously, one hand resting on his sword as he steels himself for further attacks. He wears an intricately patterned kamishimo over a purple kimono, the long pants trailing down over the floor beside him. Several stars glow in the dark night sky, and boats filled with samurai and red lanterns are silhouetted on the water. The inset at top right shows peasants gathering rushes in marshy water. A handsome design with vibrant color and soft shading in the water. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
