The Bunka Era (1804 - 1818) - Lovely image of a courtesan from the Bunka era styling her companion's hair. She leans forward with an eager smile as she puts the finishing touches to the beauty's elegant marumage style. Her companion sits quietly, holding her sleeve out in front of her. Both women wear layers of colorful kimono, their hair adorned with many hairpins and combs. A blossoming cherry tree behind them provides an attractive spring setting. Beautifully detailed with burnishing on the hairstyles, and metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the white collar and on the metal hairpins at right. A beautiful design with the larges figure dominating the subdued background. An outstanding design from Kiyochika's series depicting women from different historical periods, also in the collection of the British Museum.
