Scene from Hitokanade Kodakara Soga, 1856

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene from the kabuki play "Hitokanade Kodakara Soga" of a struggle taking place on the shore, as a beauty tries to free herself from a man grabbing hold of her obi. She clutches the black sash as she turns away from him, raising her hand in self-defense. The man stands next to a palanquin, hunching forward with a worried grimace. At left, a commoner watches from a boat on the undulating water, a fishing net in hand as he tugs on the coat draped over his shoulders. Red flames flicker in a fire basket hanging above the waves, and a full moon shine softly in the night sky at right. The actors include Kataoka Gado II as Goiya Kyonosuke at left and Iwai Kumesaburo III as the beauty Segawa, later Kiriyama's mistress Yae. A handsome triptych with soft shading in the water and sky, the rocky shore flanked by clusters of yellow blossoms.
