Samurai outside a Gate, 1870

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a samurai standing outside a gate, grimacing angrily, one hand gripping his sword and the other holding a lantern. He wears a black hood and a black coat with a burnished geometric pattern over a dark blue kimono tucked into patterned pants. In the center, a beauty smiles shyly as she looks down, holding her sleeve against her chin. The fellow at right sneers slightly as he watches her, a red tie-dyed cloth stretched between his hands. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tossho, Iwai Shijaku, and Onoe Kikugoro. A great atmospheric night scene with fine bokashi shading in the background and additional burnishing on the black hood. The first time we've offered this triptych.
