Prince Genji and Beauties Collecting Seawater, 1847 - 1850

Comments - Beautiful triptych of Prince Genji at the seashore, stopping to chat with beauties collecting pails of seawater for processing into salt. The two women at left each a yoke over her shoulders with two wooden pails hanging from ropes. A third sits on her yoke as she pauses to smoke a pipe. The young nobleman stands serenely at right, wearing a heavy coat over a pale yellow embossed kimono, his sword bearer at his side. A beautiful view of the ocean spreads out behind them, with undulating, white-capped waves framed by a tall pine trees at right. A rosy glow spreads along the horizon as the sun sets, the water dotted with the sails of ships returning home for the evening. A very attractive design combining handsome figures with a lovely natural setting.
