Original Edo era Japanese Woodblock Print
Couple Preparing to Retire for the Evening, 1861

Comments - Attractive scene of a couple preparing to retire for the evening. The young man mischievously takes hold of the end of the beauty's sleeve, looking at her with a saucy grin. She smiles back at him, trying to tug her robe free. At right, a maid waits with a pillow next to a bed surrounded by a folding screen. The lower folding screen at left is decorated with woodblock prints. At left, a woman carries a rack holding the man's sword, while a matron kneels next to a sake warmer, a table with a floral arrangement, and a tray holding graduated sake cups. Beautiful color and detail in the elegant setting and kimono and obi fabrics, with embossing in the beauty's pink robe and burnishing in the black kimono and black lacquer trim. A lovely design.
