Series; Barometer of Emotions, 1876 - 1877

Storm: Nakamura Shikan III as Watanabe no Tsuna, 1876 - Fantastic kabuki portrait of Nakamura Shikan III as the legendary samurai Watanabe no Tsuna from a rarely seen Yoshitoshi series. A loyal retainer of Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raiko), Watanabe was one of Yorimitsu's trusted "Shitenno" or "Four Guardian Kings." Here, he grips a signpost with both hands outside a temple, frowning angrily. He wears a purple kimono patterned with medallions bordered with swirling clouds tucked into a green and white dotted kamishimo over a fine suit of armor. A terrific bold design, beautifully colored and detailed with burnishing on the armor, fine line work on the hair, and bokashi shading in the night sky. A great Yoshitoshi design that we've only seen twice before.
