The Seventh Month (Fumizuki), 1855 - Dramatic scene from the "Yugao" chapter of the classic "Tale of Genji." While on his way to visit his mistress Lady Rokujo, the young prince admires the beautiful flowers called "yugao" at a beauty's home. He arranges a secret meeting with the woman who lives there, who is also called Yugao, taking her to a deserted hide-away for a tryst. While there, they are haunted by the jealous spirit of Lady Rokujo, who appears at right, waving a stick and holding a horned mask of a jealous woman. Poor Yugao cowers at left, hiding behind her kimono sleeve as she kneels next to the wall. Genji smiles at her even as he prepares to draw his sword to deal with the demon. The once-elegant palace is now shabby and dilapidated, with grass growing through the floorboards and cracks in the wall. An atmospheric scene with a full moon glowing in the dark night sky. A wonderful illustration from a rarely seen triptych series pairing Genji scenes with the Five Festivals.
