Travelers Stopping at a Teahouse, 1854 - Handsome kabuki scene from a drama about the two Hayase brothers, samurai who lost a precious painting entrusted to them and whose father was killed by the evil Toma Saburoemon. The brothers are seeking both revenge and the painting. At left, Hayase Iori sits on a bench, still wearing his coat as he smokes a pipe. His wife, Somenoi stands beside him. In the center, their servant Adachi Yasuke grimaces as he looks up, a bundle strapped to his back. Hayase Genjiro stares down at him with an angry frown. At right, another servant, Adachi Motoemon carries a large clay pot and a water dipper. Pine trees dot the grassy slope above an stone wall at left. Nice expressive figures in an interesting setting.
