Farm Woman from Ohara

Comments - Attractive modern portrait of an Oharame or farm woman from the village of Ohara near Kyoto. These beauties are known for their distinctive costumes, and can often be seen in the streets of Kyoto selling flowers and firewood. Carefully balancing a load of brushwood atop her head, she wears a deep blue kimono, the sleeves tied back with a red sash, and a white cloth over her head. A terrific design celebrating this traditional Japanese costume, rendered with bold line work. An early, unsigned work by Katsuyuki Nishijima, published by Uchida.
