Series; Eastern Customs: Enumerated Blessings

Eastern Customs: Enumerated Blessings - Attractive image from a Chikanobu series published from about 1887 to 1890. These charming scenes illustrate words that include the syllable fuku (or huku), which has many different meanings, but the primary meaning is blessing or good fortune. Women, children, and families are shown in daily life, playing games, enjoying different traditions, and celebrating festivals and events. Beautifully drawn with fine detail and vibrant color, these lovely Chikanobu designs offer a wonderful look at life in Japan during the Meiji era. A rarely seen series and a nice choice for a collector.

Banmin Kifuku: Submission by All the People - Attractive scene of beauties preparing for a festival procession as they wait outside the Imperial Palace. The two women wear identical costumes for the lion dance, with layers of blue and red kimono tucked into green plaid pants. Each has a woven hat topped with a peony blossom, like those of the men standing at right wearing short blue robes over black leggings. Behind them, the royal Meiji carriage topped with a golden phoenix leaves the palace, drawn by teams of white horses. A charming and colorful design, detailed with soft shading and touches of burnishing.
