Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from a drama about the two Hayase brothers, samurai who lost a precious painting entrusted to them and whose father was killed by the evil Toma Saburoemon. The brothers are seeking both revenge and the painting. In the center, Hayase Iori looks up as his brother Genjiro's wife, Hazue, emerges from beneath the doorway curtains carrying a lacquer box, smiling sweetly. At right, Iori's wife Somenoi tilts her head with a sly green as she holds a covered teacup on a stand. At left, Adachi Yasuke, who serves the Hayase family, scowls angrily, his brows furrowed as he eavesdrops outside the garden gate. The nicely detailed interior includes an alcove with irises hanging in a basket at right alongside shelves holding lacquer boxes. A handsome design.
