Comments - Fantastic scene from the epic tale "The Taiheiki" of the Battle of Rokuhara between the forces of Kusunoki Masatsura and Ashikaga Takauji. The Ashikaga's shogunate stronghold at Rokuhara in Kyoto is under attack by Kusunoki, with invaders swarming all over the walled courtyard of the palace, and rushing up the stairs of the building at right. Samurai clash with spears and swords, the wooden pillars and railing of the verandah pierced with arrows. The complex is engulfed in flames, with orange and gray smoke billowing upwards across the night sky. Takauji was forced to retreat to Tanba. A fantastic dramatic image, wonderfully detailed. A terrific samurai subject, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
