Shukuyu Fujin, Wife of Mokwaku, Overthrowing Choki and Machui, 1854 - Fantastic illustration from the Chinese historical novel "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms" showing Shukuyu Fujin, the wife of Mokwaku, on horseback battle enemies. Deftly wielding a spear, she unseats the rider at right, sending him tumbling to the ground, while stabbing at her other opponent at left. Another warrior lies sprawled on the ground before her. The beauty wears a long red tunic over a suit of armor, necklaces wrapped around her neck and torso, her long hair curling over her shoulders. A crowd of soldiers has gathered to watch, filling the background against the mountains in the distance. This unusual design shows Western influence in the shading of the animals and robes to give a three-dimensional appearance. A great scene with wonderful detail.
