The Rise and Fall of the Minamoto and Taira, 1857

Comments - Great depiction of the famous naval Battle of Dan-no-ura in 1185 between Taira and Minamoto forces. At top center is the magnificent Imperial Barge with a fantastic phoenix prow and a golden dragon on top. The ship is carrying the six-year-old Emperor Antoku, shown here on the shoulder of his grandmother in the prow of the boat. Just below, Yoshitsune, leader of the Minamoto clan, executes his legendary "eight boat leap," flying through the air in a crouching position, clutching his sword. Minamoto and Taira boats are in fierce pursuit, with waves crashing and fighting continuing all around. At left, a Taira warrior on a boat glares angrily, shocked that Yoshitsune has escaped his grasp. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. An incredible design, full of energy and excitement, wonderfully detailed.
