Sixth Month: Sanno Festival - Fantastic triptych depicting the Sanno Festival parade making its way along a street lined with shops. The festival celebrated the Mountain Deity (Sanno) of Hie Shrine, the protector of Edo Castle. The large float in the foreground is topped with a monkey figure clothed in elegant robes, followed by a group of performers dressed in exotic Korean costumes. Behind them appears one of the highlights of the procession, a huge elephant made of cloth over a wooden frame, moved by men walking inside the animal's legs. At right a group of beauties watches the activity from the upper story of a mansion, chatting and enjoying refreshments. A lively and colorful scene with attractive detail and soft shading in the sky. This image appears on page 136 of Bruce A. Coats's book "Chikanobu: Images of Modernity and Nostalgia." A great design from this series celebrating annual events in Edo.
