Bando Shuka I as Banzui Otoki and Bando Kichiya as the Son Chomatsu, 1855 - Handsome kabuki portrait of Bando Shuka I as Otoki, the wife of the chivalrous commoner Banzui Chobei, smiling as she looks up over her shoulder, her open lips revealing blackened teeth that indicate her married status. She wears a boldly patterned over a green print kimono and red under robe, a dotted towel draped over her shoulder. The circular inset above shows her son, Chomatsu, played by Bando Kichiya, the boy looking to the side with a slight smile, his eyebrows raised. The background is filled with cherry blossoms and buds, against a dark night sky. An attractive design from this rarely seen series, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Includes burnishing on the black coat collar.
