Series; The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers, 1862

The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers - Handsome design from Kuniaki II's series depicting scenes from the famous kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura," based on the true story of the 47 ronin. Each print features a double portrait, with expressive figures set against a nicely detailed and colored background. The artist has used an unusual vertical oban format for the subject, focusing more on the characters than the setting, with each image framed by the ronin's traditional black and white dogtooth border. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this series in its collection. A nice choice for a collector interested in this classic tale.
