Scene from Kutsuwa no Oto Tazuna no Somewake, 1861

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Kutsuwa no Oto Tazuna no Somewake." At left, the daughter Shigenoi playfully hides her face behind a black lacquer footed bowl, smiling as she watches Izutsuya Shinsuke at right out of the corners of her eyes. He stares back at her with a worried frown, his sleeves folded across his chest. In the center, Takemura Sadonshin sticks his head through the doorway curtains with an alarmed expression, his brows furrowed. The deep blue curtain features a gourd and flower pattern, while a panel at lower left depicts blossoming irises along a stream. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tanosuke III, Ichikawa Danzo VI, and Ichimura Uzaemeon XIII. Nice expressive figures in a handsomely detailed interior setting.
