Comments - Terrific triptych depicting the famous battle at the Taira fortress of Ichi-no-Tani in 1184. The castle sat on a narrow strip of land with mountains on one side and the sea on the other. Minamoto no Yoshitsune split his men into three groups, sending a small detachment of men high into the mountains above the fortress. Here, the Minamoto forces rush down from the rocky peaks, with the loyal warrior monk Benkei leading the way. He is armed with an enormous metal club, with an array of smaller weapons tied to the handle. Behind him, Yoshitsune directs the action from atop his dappled horse, gesturing with his battle fan. Banners and standards fly overhead, with tassels fluttering in the wind. The mountains are silhouetted in gray at right against the deep blue evening sky. A great image with wonderful detail in the armor and weapons, and shading in the sky.
