Comments - Terrific image of Nakamura Utaemon as Minamoto no Yoshitsune's retainer Tadanobu. He is actually a fox disguised as the loyal samurai Tadanobu, in a scene from the popular play "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura." Here, he fights off two men, gripping the wrist of one warrior over his shoulder, pulling the attacker off balance. At lower left, a man with unusual "catfish whiskers" wearing a straw mat as a raincoat tumbles backwards as he grips a makeshift sword made from a bamboo pole with a woven straw guard. Red and orange flames dance in the night sky, a sign of a supernatural event taking place. Great expressive figures, nicely detailed and colored, with soft shading and fine wood grain impression in the background.
