Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Sixth Month, 1852

Comments - Handsome portrait of a group of kabuki actors in character. At lower left, a woman portrays the Wisteria Maiden, dressed in a red kimono patterned with wisteria blossoms and waving a flowering branch. At top center, a smiling fellow carries a blossoming cherry branch decorated with poem slips. At right, a samurai looks over his shoulder with a sober expression, wearing a dramatic black coat and matching kimono patterned with swirling thunderbolts and red lightning bolts. A great design with wonderfully expressive figures and attractive detail in the costumes, including touches of burnishing.
