Mitsumata: Sawamura Sojuro III as Ashikaga Yorikane, 1852

Series; Pictures of Famous Places in Edo (Edo meisho zue)

Pictures of Famous Places in Edo - Toyokuni III's 1852 series "Pictures of Famous Places in Edo" presents kabuki portraits set against views of famous places in and around Edo. Much like other Toyokuni III series from the same year, each design features a half-length figure in the foreground, with an attractive city scene or landscape in the background. A few images feature deluxe printing techniques such as embossing or burnishing.

Each print is numbered, and it is thought that the series was intended to comprise 36 prints, but fewer than 20 designs have been identified to date. The scenes are nicely composed with large, bold, figures and handsome settings. An interesting series that we don't often come across.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 9 5/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Stitching holes at side, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and creasing. Please see photos for details.
