Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Waiting outside a Beauty's Home, 1856

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of two men waiting in the garden outside a beauty's home. A commoner in a blue checked kimono stands beside the bamboo gate, gesturing with one hand, carrying a lantern in the other. The samurai at left frowns sullenly as he waits, dressed in a black kimono, a white cloth draped over his head against the cool evening air. Inside, the beauty smiles happily, unaware of the visitors' presence, but her companion seems agitated, frowning and placing a hand on her shoulder. The sliding panels behind them are decorated with woodblock prints of Mt. Fuji, bats, and a plum tree. Wonderful color and detail in the handsome setting, with a blossoming plum tree framing the night sky.
