Chikanobu's Stories by Bakin - Terrific design from Chikanobu's series "Stories of Bakin," based on tales by the Edo-era writer Kyokutei Bakin. The author is perhaps best known for his novel "The Eight Dog Heroes of the Satomi Clan of Nanso," but he wrote many works based on samurai themes, focusing on honor and family loyalty. Published from 1890-1891, these great images feature Chikanobu's characteristic attention to detail, with creative compositions and vibrant color. Many include deluxe printing techniques such as embossing and burnishing. A very rarely seen series and a fine choice for a Chikanobu collector.
Fujiwara no Hidesato Killing the Giant Centipede - Incredible scene from Bakin's story "The Pawnbroker's Storeroom" of the warrior Fujiwara no Hidesato killing the giant centipede at the dragon king's palace. Standing on the verandah, the fearless samurai has just fired off an arrow at the hideous creature, which floats above the waves, surrounded by supernatural red flames. A courtier cowers behind him, hiding his face, while the red-haired king watches solemnly from the pavilion above. Hidesato killed the insect, saving the dragon king's realm, and was rewarded with a magical bag of rice that never ran out as well as a bolt of cloth that never ended. After that, he was known as Towara Toda, which roughly translates to Lord Bag of Rice. A fantastic supernatural subject from this famous tale, with fine detail in the clothing and armor and a dark, atmospheric setting
